Secretary general

Honorable chairs, delegates, advisors, and guests,

Welcome to the 28th iteration of SEOMUN.

My name is Kate, a senior at Seoul Foreign School, and I am honored to serve as the Deputy Secretary-General of this year’s SEOMUN conference. It is with great anticipation and pride that I welcome all delegates, student officers, and faculty advisors to one of Asia’s most dynamic and enduring MUN conferences.

SEOMUN has long stood as a space where students from across the globe convene not only to debate pressing issues but to challenge their own worldviews, engage in diplomacy, and ultimately grow into more empathetic and capable global citizens.

This year’s theme, “Voices of Tomorrow,” invites us to reimagine the structures of global discourse. It compels us to move beyond the traditional power centers of diplomacy and uplift perspectives that have too often been sidelined. Whether that voice emerges from a climate activist in the Global South, a youth-led peace initiative in a post-conflict region, or a delegate stepping into committee for the first time. In a world where rising polarization threatens collaborative governance, cultivating diverse and equitable dialogue is so crucial.

At SEOMUN, we believe that the future of diplomacy lies not in perfection, but in participation. It lies in the brave attempt to understand others and to speak with both conviction and compassion. This aspect of MUN has personally been one of the strongest driving forces for me to continue my MUN journey.

Our Secretariat has worked tirelessly to ensure that each committee not only reflects the urgency of today’s issues but also encourages creative problem-solving. Whether through engaging debates or the relationships you form from people of different backgrounds, SEOMUN XXVIII is a space for growth, creativity, and principled negotiation.

I invite you to approach this conference with curiosity, courage, and an open mind. May these three days be filled with purposeful debate, cross-cultural friendships, and a shared commitment to becoming the voices that will shape tomorrow.

Warm regards,

Kate K.

Deputy secretary general

Welcome to the 28th iteration of Seoul Model United Nations.

My name is Olivia, a senior at Seoul Foreign School, and it is my utmost honor to serve as the Secretary-General of SEOMUN XXVIII.

In an era where global challenges demand new perspectives and innovative solutions, youth-led diplomacy has become more essential than ever before. Global temperatures continue to rise, with the last decade being the warmest on record. The world’s population IS AGING. More than two-thirds of the global population lives on less than $10 a day.

These crises may seem insurmountable, but they are not inevitable. They are calls to action. And the voices answering those calls are no longer just those of world leaders or policymakers, but increasingly, of the youth. Our generation is no longer mere observers waiting their turn. We are stepping forward, speaking up, and shaping the discussions that will define our future.

This year’s theme, Voices of Tomorrow, celebrates this momentum. As former Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon puts it, “As the young leaders of tomorrow, you have the passion and energy and commitment to make a difference. What I’d like to really urge you do is to have a global vision. Go beyond your country; go beyond your national boundaries.”

SEOMUN XXVIII is a platform for exactly that. It is a conference where ideas transcend borders, where diverse voices harmonize to build thoughtful, collaborative solutions. Here, diplomacy is not confined by age or authority, rather powered by fresh perspectives and ingenuity. Each delegate possesses a unique and powerful voice that can contribute to form a collective force for change.

At my first SEOMUN, I was an inexperienced and scared delegate surrounded by confident veterans. Intimidated, I was unable to speak up and share my perspectives, only establishing my presence during attendance. Today, that experience remains one of my deepest regrets. Yet, the experience also remains one of my most valuable lessons. It shaped who I am today, helping me find my voice not only for future conferences, but in the way I navigate the world as a whole.

So I urge you: speak bravely, think boldly, and listen generously. Not only is your voice welcome, it is essential.

On behalf of the Secretariat, I welcome you to SEOMUN XXVIII. Let SEOMUN be the start - or the continuation - of your journey as a leader, a thinker, and a voice of tomorrow.

Warm regards,

Olivia K.

Secretary-General, SEOMUN XXVIII

Honorable delegates, chairs, advisors, and distinguished guests,

Welcome to SEOMUN XXVIII.

My name is Jina, a junior at Seoul Foreign School, and it is my utmost pleasure to serve as your Deputy Secretary-General.

We live in a world rapidly reshaped by a surge of technological advancements, ongoing conflicts, and intensified climate challenges. More than ever, our shared future hinges on the actions we take today. These challenges cannot be resolved in silence. They demand vision and collaboration. My experiences living across three continents have driven me to realize diversity isn’t a division, but our greatest asset to navigating an interconnected world. Model United Nations embodies this truth. Nurtured by a multitude of perspectives, our ideas can flow and accumulate into change.

Two years ago, SEOMUN was the very conference I ever attended. Just months earlier, I did not know Model United Nations existed. On the first day of the conference, I didn’t even know when to raise my placard for amendments. But across those three days, I realized something that stayed with me far beyond the closing ceremony: in MUN, your ideas don’t stand alone. They’re elevated with alliances and sharpened throughout debates. It’s the challenge and the community around it that gives MUN its meaning. Each voice brings a committee closer to the future it envisions.

Sometimes, this can begin with a voice brave enough to speak out for a future where our humanity, our planet, and our hopes can thrive together. At SEOMUN XXVIII, we honor the power of voices—the voices of youth, the voices of tomorrow, and the voices of each delegate aspiring to catalyze the change we want to see.

My greatest hope for SEOMUN XXVIII is that it becomes the platform where you discover and strengthen that voice. Because its power isn't in perfection or flawless articulation, but in the sheer courage of raising your voice. The voice you cultivate here will carry far beyond the last gavel. No matter your path forward, your voice holds the power to amplify into communities, into our shared world, shaping the tomorrow we're collectively building.

Sincerely,

Jina S.

Deputy Secretary-General, SEOMUN XXVIII

Honorable advisors, distinguished student officers, and esteemed delegates,

On behalf of the SEOMUN XXVIII Secretariat Team, it is my great pleasure to welcome you to this year’s conference.

My name is Jamie, a junior at Seoul Foreign School (SFS), and it is my honor to serve as your Head of Admin for the 28th iteration of SEOMUN.

This year’s theme, “Voices of Tomorrow,” resonates deeply with what SEOMUN stands for. It serves as a reminder that meaningful changes begin when young voices speak with courage and clarity regarding current issues. At a time when global issues, including climate change and war, seem insurmountable, it is our ideas, our convictions, and our willingness to engage that provide a reason and catalyst for hope. Whether this is your first step into Model United Nations or your return as a delegate, know that your presence and voice matter.

Through this conference, we hope to show that Model United Nations is more than just debates. It is an opportunity to challenge our understanding of the world, to listen as much as we speak and to take a step forward to growth. But perhaps more importantly, SEOMUN serves as a space to discover who you are as a person—how you lead, how you speak, and how you challenge uncertainties with empathy and compassion.

Personally, MUN has been one of the most transformative parts of my academic journey. Despite the adversities faced, it has taught me that confidence is built not in moments of certainty, but in moments of courage and even in moments of failure. At my first SEOMUN, I still vividly remember the fear of answering POIs, the way my legs and hands trembled as I read my speech, and most of all, the embarrassment I felt after making countless mistakes on the podium. At the time, the only emotion I felt was shame—shame that I wasn’t good enough, that I wasn’t making a valuable impact on MUN.

But upon reflection, I realized that those moments were not signs of weakness—they were stepping stones. Every time I stood up despite fear or every time I raised my placard again after making a mistake, I was growing. MUN showed me that an individual doesn’t need to be flawless; it’s about accepting the long-term of cultivating your own voice and confidence. Moreover, it taught me that fear is not the opposite of strength—it is a part of it.

To this day, I carry this lesson with me. As your Head of Admin, I encourage you to view SEOMUN not as a competition, but a journey to grow and discover who you are as a leader. Our “Tomorrow” may be unpredictable, but by finding your voice, you have the power to shape tomorrow.

Best Regards,

Jamie O.
